What Went Wrong? Chapter One

      Selena sat contently by the fire, long boa constrictor tail curled around four leathery eggs she'd bundled in a blanket and kept by the fire. Godmanchester was a good location in England to raise her hatchlings with her husband Quainte, no one really minded the small family of snake demons, most of the residents didn't even know about them. Braiding her long golden blond hair, she checked the eggs regularly, about every fifteen to twenty minutes, checking for movement in them. They were close to hatching; they usually took several months after birth to develop a bit more and hatch, and she wanted to see the fruits of her labors soon.
      As Quainte arrived home from tending to their crops he smiled kissing his wife softly and shifted back to his more comfortable, half human and half snake form curling around her to keep her warm.
      "How are you doing my love?" He inquired, checking her over making sure she was gaining back the sever weight lost she'd gone through from giving birth to the eggs.
      "Much better, how're the fields?" Selena smiled cuddling against him enjoying the warmth as it lasted.
      "They're better, everything is almost ready to harvest; you worry about keeping yourself and our kids warm." Holding her close Quainte glanced at the eggs curiously frowning slightly. "Not yet?"
      "No but soon, they moved a bit before." Selena spoke softly watching them as one began to rock again. "Oh, Quainte look~!" Moving over to the blankets Selena carefully picked up the egg as the shell split and a tiny hand poked out. Peeling back the shell she carefully looked over the little hatchling and held it up to her husband. "We have a little girl, she has your tail." Selena smiled endearingly at the newborn as she squirmed looking up at them with ruby-like eyes hugging her tail.
      "Janemia, I think we should call her that." Quainte smiled playing with the new born, pointing to another two eggs that were splitting. "Two more coming Selena." Nodding she carefully pulled one apart, then the second.
      "Let's name the curled horned boy Nate and the devil horned one Taltin." Handing them to Quainte and looked back down at the last egg frowning. Gently picking it up Selena looked it over biting her lip. "Come on little guy come on out…" Biting her lip upsetly as the egg remained still and felt a bit cold to the touch. "Quainte… I think this one's too cold…"
      "That doesn't make any sense, that one was the closest to the fire…" gently passing the children to his wife, Quainte took the egg glancing at Selena then back. "I'll take it outside and bury it…" Frowning he quietly made his way to the door opening it and paused as the egg rocked weakly in his hand. Cautiously peeling back the shell he looked down at the small demon and froze.
      "Uh Selena… You might want to come see this one…" Glancing over at Selena as she made her way over, he nodded to the hatchling in his hands.
      "…She's… Different." Selena looked over the little girl studying her solid black tail, solid snow white skin, with completely crimson eyes with no pupils and no sclera either. Smiling slightly as the hatchling looked up at them Selena glanced at Quainte. "I like her, she's my little oddball."
      "Let's call her Nadia then." Quainte smiled softly bringing her inside and settled them all in the blanket. Curling around them the two parents smiled warmly at each other, sharing a few loving words, and cuddled together around their new children drifting to sleep.
